Northwest Stories: The Skandia Ball

In the fall of 2010, we visited the Skandia Ball with videographer extraordinaire Doug Plummer to learn more about the large Scandinavian community that calls the Northwest home. Much of our history and heritage has been shaped by the strong Scandinavian influence thanks to the influx of immigrants brought at the turn of the 20th century by the fishing industry and the similarities between the Pacific Northwest and Scandinavian climates. It’s nice to see that the traditions of Norway, Sweden and Finland are still being practiced today and that they have become such an integral part of our Festival!

About Molly

I love that the Folklife Festival is a yearly meeting place to celebrate the different cultures that make the Pacific Northwest special. When I’m not here, you can find me knitting, training for a triathlon or on a quest to find the best Indian food in Seattle.
