Northwest Stories: Diwali

Natya Leela by Piper Hanson

Also known as “The Festival of Lights,” Diwali is an important holiday in the Hindu religion celebrating the triumph of good over evil. Traditionally, the celebration lasts for five days with different activities planned for each day. Here in the Northwest, the India Association of Western Washington (IAWW) commemorates Diwali each year with a large dance performance. Participants (all are IAWW members) practice for months, but it isn’t just a dance recital. The Diwali celebration is a chance for the Indian community in the Northwest to get together and celebrate their heritage in a way that is as traditional as it is unique to the IAWW.

This video is the second in the Northwest Stories eight part video series filmed by Doug Plummer. Watch the video and see even more examples of Indian culture at the Festival this May!

About Molly

I love that the Folklife Festival is a yearly meeting place to celebrate the different cultures that make the Pacific Northwest special. When I’m not here, you can find me knitting, training for a triathlon or on a quest to find the best Indian food in Seattle.
